Hackers launch cyber attack on Alice traders

21 Sep

Two Alice Springs businesses have had their computer systems held to ransom by hackers.

Northern Territory police have been contacted by the businesses, which had their systems hacked within hours of each other yesterday.

The hackers threatened to invade their computers with child pornography if the businesses did not pay up.

One of the business owners, Jeremy Spoehr from TDC Refrigeration, says he paid the hackers the $3,000 they were demanding but his system is still down.

“I’m standing here looking at a blank screen,” he said.

“The whole system was shut down and they couldn’t do anything about it.”

He says it is costing his business money and he is going to fly IT workers to Alice Springs to fix the problem.Mr Spoehr is warning other businesses around the town to ensure they have good cyber protection.

“Check your servers or anything you do that’s online,” he said.   “Make sure you are well protected. I mean I had a lot of protection on my server and codes but they hacked through that obviously quite easily.”

Alistair MacGibbon from the Centre for Internet Safety says the scam opens the door for a range of crimes.  “These scammers if they are inside your computer they are stealing stuff from you,” he said.

Police have warned people not to respond to similar threats. –  Yahoo News
